On the state level...
NYS Department of Environmental Conservation
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is currently accepting applications for Technical Assistance Grants (TAGs). TAGs are tools available to eligible community groups to increase public awareness and understanding of remedial activities taking place at certain contaminated sites in their communities. The grants are intended to help the recipient and the community it represents understand existing environmental data developed about the site, comment on site remedial activities and proposals, and share them with the community. No matching contributions are required on the part of the grant recipient.
Eligibility: Under the TAG program, eligible sites include State Superfund Program and Brownfield Cleanup Program sites that pose a significant threat to public health or the environment. Eligible groups must be non-responsible parties incorporated as not-for-profit corporations under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. An eligible community group must certify that its membership represents the interest of the community affected by the site, and that its members’ health, economic well-being or enjoyment of the environment is potentially threatened by the site.
Funding: Up to $50,000 per site.

NYS Department of State
The NYS Department of State is accepting applications for Local Government Efficiency (LGE) Grants. The goal of the program is to reduce municipal expenses and property taxes by helping municipalities plan and implement projects that have positive impacts on the taxpayers. All LGE projects need to demonstrate new opportunities for financial savings and operational efficiencies. Applicants must also quantify positive sustainable tax impacts expressed in dollars per $1,000 of Full Value and additional potential benefits.
Eligibility: NYS local government entities. Two or more eligible entities must apply jointly for Local Government Efficiency Grants unless the application is for:1. A city or county charter revision to implement functional consolidations or cooperative agreements that will achieve savings and management improvements; or2. A plan for a sustainable reduction in the growth rate of a local government’s property tax levy if such average annual growth rate for the previous five-year period is 5% or higher.
Funding: Up to $4 million for the 2011-2012 program year.
Deadline: Questions are due on February 14, 2012. Applications are due March 21, 2012 at 4 p.m.

Institute of Museum and Library Services
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is accepting grant applications that focus on furthering the education of museum professionals. The purpose of the 21st Century Museum Professionals grants program is to increase the capacity of museums by improving the knowledge and skills of museum professionals in multiple institutions. Grant funds may support a wide range of activities, including the development and implementation of classes, seminars, and workshops; resources to support leadership development; collection, assessment, development, and/or dissemination of information that leads to better museum operations; activities that strengthen the use of contemporary technology tools to deliver programs and services; support for the enhancement of pre-professional training programs; and organizational support for the development of internship and fellowship programs.
Eligibility: Public or private not-for-profit agencies, organizations or associations that engage in activities designed to advance museums and the museum profession may also apply. In addition, institutions of higher education, including public and nonprofit universities are eligible.
Deadline: March 15, 2012
Funding: $15,000 - $250,000 (1:1 matching requirement)

National Endowment for the Arts
The NEA is seeking applicants for its Art Works program. Art Works supports projects that encourage the following 4 outcomes: creation of art, public engagement, lifelong learning, and livability. Applicants must select the outcome most relevant to their project. Funding is available for both community-based and school-based projects.
Eligibility: County and town governments; special districts; independent school districts; public and state controlled institutions of higher education; Native American tribal governments; nonprofits having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS; other than institutions of higher education; private institutions of higher education

The Rite Aid Foundation
The Rite Aid Foundation is committed to helping people in the communities Rite Aid serves lead happier, healthier lives. The foundation supports specific programs that focus on health and wellness and have a health-service component. The Rite Aid Foundation does not provide general operating support.
Eligibility: 501(c)(3) non profit organizations, and be located in a community that Rite Aid operates.
Funding: On average, grants range from $1,000 to $20,000.
Deadline: Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis; the next review date is April 1, 2012.
The Commonwealth Fund
The Commonwealth Fund seeks to fund applicants with goals to improve healthcare practice and policy. Some of the programs include, but are not limited to: Health System Quality and Efficiency, Federal and State Health Policy, and Payment and System Reform. Within these program areas, preference is given to proposals to clarify the scope of serious and neglected problems; to develop and evaluate the impact of practical, innovative models for addressing such problems; to disseminate tools and models of care that have proven to be effective; or to analyze the impact of policies and trends on well-defined issues. Letters of inquiry are required before the application process can move forward.

How to Approach a Foundation: March 27
Attendees will learn how to initiate contact with potential donors, plan calls and meetings, and build
partnerships with sponsors. This class is intended for fundraisers who have some experience but are
